The Weekly Review - An Introduction
On getting started, what this newsletter is going to be, and how to conduct an effective weekly review.
Hello! And welcome to the first instalment and The Weekly Review.
I’ve wanted to start this newsletter for about 6 months. But for a few reasons it never happened.
What this newsletter is about
I’ve been doing a weekly review for about a year now and I use Notion to do mine. It’s a repetitive task and one I find comes round alarmingly quickly each week. But nonetheless I’d say it’s the single most productive thing I do with my time.
Below, I’ve explained my weekly review process in detail. The plan is to write down my thoughts surrounding the weekly review here and discuss how it goes.
I’ll also share some articles or videos I’ve loved in the week, and a notion template here and there.
How I do my Weekly Review
Review the previous week
I review the metrics from my past week and evaluate on a scale of 1-5 how I think I did overall. This is normally divided into 3 areas that I find important and score separately:
Health & Fitness
Work
Family & Self care
I take some time to appreciate where I’ve done well and want to keep up the momentum. I also notice the areas that need improvement but put that aside while I complete step 2 of my review.
Plan the next week
This is the next & most practical part of my review. And kind of echoes the traditional GTD weekly review. I get everything out of my head and make sure I take a look at all the non negotiable actions & events in the upcoming week. This lets me know how much time I have for pushing forward on my goals and plans.
Set goals for next week
Finally, once I’ve got the boring parts of my week blocks out, I can start to fit in the things I want to achieve around them.
I take a look at the results from Part 1 of my review and decide on some actions I can take to improve on areas I was lacking in. For instance, if I didn’t do as well in my health and fitness then I’ll schedule some time to do meal prep. Or, I'll put workouts in my calendar so I know I’ll do them.
What next?
Do let me know your thoughts on this newsletter if you have time. I know a lot of people who may come across this newsletter will do a weekly review of their own. I’d love to hear your process and even showcase some different methods of doing weekly reviews on here or on my social media channels.
